WAIKATO COUNTY APPEALS TO GOVERNMENT

COST OF MAINTENANCE (Prom Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. The Main Highways Board has made it plain to the Waikato County Council tjiat it must pay up its share of the maintenance cost of the Great South Road between Ohinewai and Ngaruawahia. It lias sent the following letter to the council; “With reference to your contribution toward the cost ol! the work in question, I am directed: to Inform you that toe Main Highways Board desires to ; express its displeasure at the attitude of the Waikato County Council, and to Inform you thatt the board is now determined to enforce its decision that , your council shall contribute £1 for • £2 toward the cost of maintaining the 1 section concerned. | “This decision was arrived at only - after full consideration of the case, and - the beard has instructed me to deduct “ the amount due from any subsidies - payable to the Waikato County Council.” Members of the council did not take kindly to this decision, and It was * unanimously resolved to ask the Gov- ' ernment to appoint a commission consisting of one representative of the l council, one representative of the • Highways Board, and an umpire to be appointed by the representatives, to in- * quire into the question. Representations are also to be made ! to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Public Works.
