LAND SETTLEMENT

OPENING FOREST RESERVES Between 'Waihi and the Whangamata district regular communication by road is to be established shortly, and now the Waihi Chamber of Commerce is endeavouring to have the Crown lands between the two centres thrown open for selection. According t:o a plan supplied to the chamber by the Crown Lands Department at Auckland, apart from the large tracts marked off as State forest reserves, there are/ about 12,000 acres of Crown land available for settlement. A considerable portion of this is suitable for dairy farming, and the remainder for sheep and cattle raising. The Commissioner of Crown Lands, it is stated, will visit the district in the near future, and, following his inspection, blocks will be surveyed, subdivided, and balloted for.
