Sixteen Hanged For Murders During Java Rising Last Year

A CCORDING to advices received from Batavia, sixteen natives were hanged for murders committed during the Communist rising in Java last year. Twenty others are to be hanged in Sumatra. The Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies has reprieved a number of natives previously condemned, but the popular outcry against this action prevented further reprieves. The executions have hail a marked effect. The political situation is now quiet.—A. and N.Z.
