ONEHUNGA BOROUGH

HALF-YEARLY RETURNS

A statement submitted to the Onehunga Borough Council last evening by the town clerk showed that the revenue was £27,147, and the expenditure £24,729. Interest and sinking fund amounted to £7,626: streets maintenance, £4,458; waterworks, £3,417; hospital levy, £1,263; salaries, £1,088; rebate on rates, £719; Hillsborough Cemetery account, £592; insurances, £442; Fire Board, £415; and streets lighting, £398. The Mayor, Mr. W. C. Coldicutt, stated that the expenditure was over the allotment, but if the finances for the next half-year were carefully administered there would be no cause for worry. A pleasing feature, said Mr. E. Morton, was that permanent work had been done out of revenue instead of out of loans. Even if it entailed an overdraft he considered that they should continue that policy. Mr. H. Campling outlined the permanent works done at a cost of £2,400. He considered that the council should now endeavour to improve the footpaths. The One Tree Hill Road Board wrote agreeing to the proposal that the council maintain Oranga Avenue and Haniti Road, and the board maintain Rockfield Road from Mount Smart Road to Oranga Avenue. The board also agreed to the council laying a sewer and water main in Rockfield Road without payment of compensation, subject to the same right being granted to the board in Oranga Avenue and Hauiti Road. It was pointed out that the work on Rockfield Road necessitated formation as well as maintenance. The question was referred back to the board for further explanation. The St. John Ambulance Association was granted permission tc take up a street collection on November 4 in aid of its funds. The monthly return of building permits showed that permits were granted for 19 dwellings valued at £14,050, and two other buildings.valued at £325. Alterations to dwellings and other buildings amounted to £1,063 10s. It was decided that the Health Department be notified of the nuisance caused by fertiliser works at Te Papapa.
