TE KUITI FIRE TEAROOMS GUTTED A fire occurred about 11.45 on Saturday night in the Rose Tea looms. To tea roc-ms and kitchen were gutted and damage done to other rooms bv fire and water. Damage was also done to footwear stock in Calver’s boot shop on the ground floor beneath the tea rooms by water. , _ A good save was effected by the Te Kuiti Fire Brigade. The buildings were owned by Mr. Jones Prosser. Auckland, and were insured, with the contents. ROTORUA ORPHANS ENJOYABLE EVENING The fortnightly meeting of the Orphans was held in Princes G; te last Thursday evening. Vice-president Bro. W. A. Meßean occupying the ciiair. A very happy evening was held and the various performers were loudly applauded. Messrs. Painton anil ISllis discoursed sweet sounds from their violins, Mr. Balzer tuned up on his saxophone. Bro. Cook, Paero i, and Dan Flooc:, Auckland, delighted with musical monologues and humorous items. Bro. Searle, Auckland. Irt song, and Bro. .Jackson, Auckland, in recitation. BEE;R FOR PAEROA BREWERY RESTARTED There is a brewery in Paeroa which has experienced many ups and downs, and when no-license was carried it closed down altogether. Now, however, a new life for the old establishment appears to have set in, far another star; has been made. A strong Auckland syndicate, with ample capital, has taken it over, and having secured a competent brewer from the Old Country, has commenced operations. It is thought, despite the fact of “tied” houses, the company will be able to easily dispose of its output. Last week quite a number of the new shareholders were in Paeroa inspecting their venture. HAURAKI A. AND P. SOCIETY SHOW IN DECEMBER The General Committee of the; Hauraki A. and P. Association was held last week to complete arangements for the show which is to be held in December. Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P., accepted the position of patron and donated iZ 5 toward the prize funds. Stewards were selected to arrange for paddocking of stock. The following canvassers were appointed: Messrs. A. W. Maclaren and M. Crimmins (Karangahake, . Waikino, Waihi and Waihi Plains); the president and secretary (Thames anf. Hauraki Plain s): the president, secretary and W. D. Nicholson (Paeroa). CHURCH AND DANCING PRESBYTER LAN VIEW The Waikato Presbytery has expressed strong disapproval of the promotion of dances and card games to raise money for Presbyterian Church purposes, and has passed a resolution as follows: “Presbytery regrets to learn that the church managers at Ngaruawahia, no doubt with the best intentions and a desire to help on the cause, conducted, in the name of the Presbyterian Church, a euchre party and dance, with the; object of raising church funds. It was resolved that the council could j not .comply w'ith the request to allow < the borough staff to construct a bitumen tennis court at the public hospital. It was decided to prosecute W. At the request of the council Mr. L* A. Grant, assistant town clerk, at-» tended to state his case in regard to the Mayor’s motion that his services be dispensed with. After full evidence had been heard, Cr. Thompson seconded the Say?r s motion pro forma, and Crs. Robb and Broad moved an amendment that in view of the fact that th€> council was making a change of booking systems next month., the matter be deferred tin the January meeting.
