WHANGAREI RUGBY
END OF SEASON KARAMEA WINS KNOCK-OUT Conditions for the final Rugby game of the season were favourable at Kensington Park on Saturday afternoon. Maungakaramea played Old Boys in the final of the knock-out competition, and some good football resulted, honours going to the first-mentioned team by 17 points to 7. The country club has thus won double honours this season, having also annexed the senior competition cup. For the winning side Kerr, at fullback, was again prominent, and other backs consistently in action were Mackey, Paki, Smith and Beehre. The forwards were too solid for Old Boys and rarely let the home team’s backs get going. The Morrissey brothers, O’Shea and Child were most prominent. The Old Boys’ backs found it hard to get into action, as their forwards could not hold their opponents. Waterman, Collins, Abbott, Brunnette, Miller and Wilson all showed up well in'an uphill fight. Sheriff and Webber were the best of the forwards. Mo score was made in the first spell, although ’Karamea had four penalty shots at goal, any one of which might have landed. KARAMEA LIVENS UP After change-over the game was; still tight until well on in the spell, when from a scrum near Old Boys’ line the leather went out to Beehre, who dived over. Kerr failed at goal. Karamea 3, Old Boys 0. Shortly after this Mackey made a fine opening and transferred to Smith, who was following closely. The latter dodged through the remainder of the team, and scored the best try of the day. Kerr again failed to convert. 'Karamea 6, Old Boys 0. v Shortly after half-time Collins, for Old Boys, did a great piece of solo work, breaking through the opposing ranks and short-punting when confronted by the full-back. The latter got possession of the ball but was tackled so hard by Collins that he was unable to force and dropped the ball, Fraser scoring a try. Waterman failed with the kick. ’Karamea 6, Old Boys -3. Almost immediately Abbott, the Old Boys’ full-back, took a pot from about half-way, which soared over the post. ’Karamea then took the offensive, and from a scrum P. Morrissey scored. Kerr added two points with the kick. ’Karamea 11, Old Boys 3. Just before the last change Abbott took another pot at goal from nearly half-way, this time successfully. ’Karamea 11. Old Boys 7. Half-way through the last spell, Mackey made a neat opening and transferred to Paki. The latter beat his man and sent the ball out to Beehre who scored. Kerr failed to convert. 'Karamea 14, Old Boys 7. The last score was obtained by Paki, who slipped over from a ruck in Old Boys’ 25. Kerr once more failed with the kick. ’Karamea 17, Old Boys 7. Mr. J. Petterson was referee. JUNIOR FINALS Portland met Old Boys at Kensington Park in the final of the junior knock-out competition. The game was fast and hard, Portland winning by 11 points to 6.
Old Boys were very unlucky to lose. The referee, Mr. Bowden, kept his own time, and his watch must have got a knock, as it stopped during the game. The result was that 19 minutes overtime was played during which Portland scored twice. Old Boys were leading 6 to 5 until several minutes g.fter the expiration of the correct time.
