PAPATOETOE CLUB

SUCCESSFUL OPENING (From Our Oion Correspondent) PAPATOETOE, To-day. With the playing: areas sheltered from the keen southerly wind, the Papatoetce Bowling Club on Saturday entertained the attendance of visitors yet gathered on its greens. Every club in the city sent along its quota of represntatives to swell the numbers, and the suburt>an clubs for miles around had their colours intermingled in the play. The afternoon was made all the more enjoyable by the presence of the Papatoetoe Town Band, which attended in full strength and gave a number of items under the leadership of the recently appointed bandmaster, Mr. E>e Clifton. The greens were perfect, and reflect great credit oil the green superintendent and groundsman, M!r. Eawe. At the afternoon tea adjournment, Mr. T. R. Smytheman, president, welcomed the guests, and after a few happy words, called upon Mrs. Smytheman to throw the jack. The greens were then declared open for the 1927-28 season, with best wishes from all. Mr. E E. McLennan, M.P., patron of the club, was present and in a few words congratulated the members on the condition of their grounds and wished the club every success for the future. The Auckland Centre Executive was represented at this part of the function by Mr. G. M. Reid, who congratulated the club on the creditable showing made on this its opening day, wishing it all sorts of luck for the new season. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the ladies. The members of the cricket and tennis clubs were guests at this function. Play was continued till dusk, one and all enjoying one of the most successful openings yet held by the club.
