HAZARDOUS PASTIME
WATERSIDERS CAUGHT POLICE ROUND-UP RESULTS IN 23 FINES Press Association. WELLINGTON, Friday. Work being slack this afternoon about 20 wharf employees decided to play at hazards and “penny” poker at the Thorndon breastwork. A large box was used as a table and forms were placed round it. Fifteen men were playing at hazards and nearby eight others played “penny” poker. Suddenly Detective Tricklebank and several constables from the police station surrounded the players and arrested them. The look-out man ran away, but was overtaken by motor. A late sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M. The 23 men were convicted and fined £2 each, in default, seven days’ imprisonment. They were given seven days in which to pay.
