COMPANY TAXATION

“AN INIQUITOUS SYSTEM” (Prom Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Friday. Severe condemnation of the present system of company taxation was made by speakers at the annual meeting of shareholders in the Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company held to-day. It seemed iniquitous, said Mr. A. \V. Blanchard, that a small man who paid a minimum tax privately should have to pay a maximum tax of 4s 6d in the £1 through a company, particularly where the company failed to pay a dividend on the capital invested as was the case this year with the Farmers’ Auctioned ring Company. Two commissions, he stated, had brought down recommenda’.ions which the Government had not see t fit to adopt. The Government received about 75 per cent, of its taxation from companies, and, as this was an easy means of collection, the authorities seemed too lazy to make the change. The chairman, Mr. H. S. Hawkins, said frequent representations were made to the Government for relief, but no success was met with.
