CERF LEADS FIELD TO THE POST IN LING MEMORIAL (Special to THE SUN.) PALMERSTON N., Friday. The weather for the opening of the Otaki Spring Meeting was fine, and the course was in beautiful order. ELYSIANOR’S KAPITI HURDLES Elysianor and Peshwa were the favourites for the Kapiti Hack Hurdles, and they finished in the principal places Elysianor and Joyeuse led in the early stages from Peshwa and Joyeuse was in front six furlongs from home, but a bad jump saw her drop back, and from there on Elysianor and Peshwa ran together all the way. Peshwa held a slight advantage at the last fence, but Elysianor finished best, and won by a head. Vexatious was two lengths away third, Panorama ancl Joyeuse, who were well back, were next- Vexatious finished fast from a long way back. ARO DE VAL FAILS AGAIN

Aro De tfal, who has let his connections down on more than one occasion of late, was sent out a .£2 5 better favourite than Maui for the Puhi Maiden Plate., from which Calithe and Fee Simple were the only defections. The Awupuni Shining Star was third ia demand. The last-named was smartest to begin, and led along the back from Aropeta and Rotowhero, Helotis, who had been slow to begin, moving up into third place. Rounding the turn, Shining Star and Rotowhero v -ere first to turn for home, from HeLtis and Little Queen and in the run c-own the straight the Trenthamtrained Rotowhero went to the front to stall off a challenge from Shining t; tar and win by a neck, with Helotis three lengths back. VIGILANCE AGAIN SUCCESSFUL Keddar and A nolo were the public ‘ancles for the Katihiku Hack Handicap, in which Biimp declined his engagement. The winner turned up in ‘ ‘gilance, w'ho followed up his success at the Manawatu Hunt fixture by “gain scoring in attractive fashion. The ’vinner went to the front from the barker rise, with Keddar and Pangolin in Airtight and Volplane being next. They raced in that order to , e straight entrance where, with 'leads straightened out, Vigilance drew '? ut lo yin comfortably by two lengths rom Keddar, with Rowley, who had ? een whipper-in five furlongs from 10me ' in third berth, a length further iway Then came Airtight, Henna and wink at short intervals, with Pangolin next. CERF SHOWS THE WAY Tresham and Tame Fox were abseinJf® J rom *he Ling Memorial Stakes •nanaicap, in which Dtgage was sent

I out a warm order, the Kilbroney mare carrying almost twice as much as the second elect. Shining Armour, who was but £3 ahead of the veteran Nukumai. From a moving start the field was sent, away on its mission in good line, Cerf and Shining Armour being the first to show. Passing the official stand, Cerf was showing the way to Shining Armour, Our Jack, Degage, Nukumai and Santiago. Entering the back, Our Jack burst to the front, but was immediately disposed of by Santiago, who opened up a gap from Our Jack, Shining Armour and Cerf, with Degage and Nukumai together, and Rouex and Novar in the rear as the field rounded the bend for home- Cerf again took the lead to land first into the straight from a. bunched ficdd. In the run to the post Degage promised to overhaul Cerf, bin: the light-weight: answered strongly, and retained his position to win by’ a neck, with Nukumai half a length away from. Degage. Then came Our Jack, Shining Armour, Novar and Santiago. DUKE ABBEY’S BAD START

The withdrawal of Arch Arrow, The Raider and Bourse reduced the field in the Pahiko Hack Handicap to eight runners, the major portion of the investments going on Avro and Duke Abbey’, the former being £167 the bet - ter fancied. Duke Abbey delayed tin? start, refusing to stand up to the barrier, and he was eventually started from behind the field, and thus accorded Mandy and Borsalene a big handicap. At the jump-out, Duke Abbey burst up through the field, running down the back, and was in third berth behind Mandy and Borsalene at the half-mile peg. with Bank Draft, Bronstell and Avro next in order. Mandy was just ahead of Duke Abbey at the turn for home, where the latter went to the front, with Avro in pursuit. The Awapurii representative held his position to pass the post with a two-lengths advantage from Avro, with Mandy another length further back. ‘Bronstell was fourth, with Bissac. Borsalene. Exhibition and Bank Draft next in order. FREE SPECULATION Despite the fact that there were but five runners in the Waitawa Handicap, there was very free speculation, Crown Area being entrusted with £1,447 as compared with the £532 entrusted upon Lausanne. The latter was first out from the barrier, with Mireusonta in close attendance, and Kilbronsy’th, Crown Area and Deluge racing at close intervals. Crown Area ran up to Kilbronsyth crossing the top, Lausanre and Mireusonta being together immediately in front. The favourite was up with the leaders when heads were straightened, ancl was not extended, to win nicely by half a length from Mireusonta, with Lausanne and Kilbronsyth at similar intervals. Deluge was whip-per-in two and a-half lengths back. SLASHING FINISH Bisox was elected favourite for the Taumanuka Hack Handicap, the Bisogne mare carrying £522, as compared with £343 by Boy and £372 by Oratrix. Kilmoyler was actually first out of the barrier, but Land Rent had assumed the role of pacemaker going out of the straight from Kilmoyler arid Boy, with Mister Gamp bringing up the rear. Oratrix moved up into second place behind Land Rent entering the back, with Boy, Kilmoyler, and Mister Gamp next, Koauau having dropped back. The order underwent little change among the leaders crossing the top, save that Boy dropped behind Mister Gamp. Oratrix and Mister Gamp landed first into the straight, where 1 Boy came up on the rails and, in a

slashing finish, Boy secured the verdict by a nose from Oratrix. with Mister Gamp a couple of lengths back. Then came Koauau and KilmissHASTINGS WINNER BEATEN Anolo, Buoyant and Our Jack were defections from the Kereihi Roewa Handicap, the open seven-furlongs event, leaving a dozen runners to go to the post. Waicullus, a winner at Hastings the previous Saturday, was sent out a warm order, the Lucullus gelding, who had the services of R. Reed, being entrusted with £834, as compared with Orazone’s £453. Waicullus, who had drawn the rails, was first out, and led on to the course proper from Royal Land, Beaumont, Orazone, Vesperus and Horornea, but before the four-furlongs peg had been reached Royal Land was filling the role of pacemaker from Horornea. At the turn for home Royal Land was still showing the way from Horornea, Beaumont, Orazone and Waicullus, the favourite having been drifting back on the rails. R.oyal Land was first into the straight, where Beaumont immediately made a forward move, while Waicullus had to come round the field. In the run to the post Beaumont was driven along and lasted long enough to beat Waicullus home by threequarters of a length, with Orazone two lengths back. Then came Horornea and Pas-' sionate.
