SKIN-GRAFTING HERO

IMMOVABLE FOR MONTH

For over four weeks a patient at Queen Mary’s Hospital. Roehampton, voluntarily submitted to a test of immobility that provides one of the m °st striking instances of self-sacri-fice. Haying successfully undergone a grafting operation, he offered his own blood and flesh for a similar operation on a fellow-patient, who was delicate un d of poor constitution. This necessitated the two men being bound together in such a way that movement should be impossible. The first experiment failed after three weeks, as the men, unfortunately, moved in their sleep. Nothing daunted, the volunteer again submitted himself. This time the two men were bound together by thick plaster of paris. After an interval of four weeks the grafting was complete, and the men were separated. Relating the incident in her annual letter to the helpers among the wounded soldiers at the hospital, Mrs. Ada Wray «ay*; “j wonder if any medal is good enough for tnat unselfish man?”
