MAORIS STAGE UNIQUE COOKING DEMONSTRATION ON SLOPES OF MT. EDEN
■m MAUNGAWHAU, as Mount Eden was known to the Maoris of old, once again has seen kai cooked on its slopes. Time was when, the mountain carried a considerable native population. Nowadays only the deserted pits give evidence of former Maori industry. A band of natives, under the direction of the Te Akarana Maori Association, to-day showed Europeans how ancient Maoris cooked delicacies in the hangis, or earth ovens. The demonstration was carried out in conjunction with the Maori Race Section of the Auckland Institute.
