JOSEPH HISLOP

COMING TO AUCKLAND Messrs. J. and N. Tait announce that they have made arrangements for Joseph Hislop, the famous British tenor, now delighting huge audiences in Australia, to give a series of concerts in the Auckland Town Hall, commencing on November 3. Referring to the Australian debut of Joseph Hislop, the famous British tenor, the Sydney “Daily Telegraph” said that the celebrated singer was given a tumultuous reception by a great audience. “In an exacting programme,” continues the critic, “embracing extracts from operas and many ballads, the tenor demonstrated a voice of amazing quality and power employed to perfection. Over

and above that he proved himself an artist of interpretation. Beginning more or less quietly with Beethoven’s ‘Adelaide,’ he went on through a delightful group of smaller songs, revealing at every step the rich variety of his voice and a faultless technique. Then in ‘Recondite Artonia,’ from ‘Tosca,’ he showed in an instant the reason for his world-wide fame as an operatic artist. Later there came the aria, ‘Che gelida Manina,’ from Puccini’s ‘La Boheme,’ ‘On with the Motley,’ from ‘Pagliacci,’ and a group of songs which included ‘Kishmul’s Galley’ (arranged by Kennedy Fraser from ‘The Songs of the Hebrides’), and ‘Mary of Argyle,’ with ‘La Donna e Mobile’ added as an extra. In his varied efforts the artist simply went from trimuph to triumph.” Joseph Hislop is to be supported by Alberto Sciarretti, the distinguished solo pianist and accompanist, who is noted for his piano recitals in Europe and America. Neil Hamilton, considered one of the most promising young leading men in motion pictures, was selected to play opposite Esther Ralston in the latter’s second starring Paramount: vehicle, “Ten Modern Commandments.” Hamilton plays the role of a young man who finds himself in the whirl of pres-ent-day jazz society, the part offering him one of the best opportunities of his career.
