FINE CLASSIC STRUGGLE TE MONANUI’S MITCHELSON CUP THE Spring meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was opened at Ellerslie to-day in fine weather, and with a large attendance. The going was quite good as was shown by the fact that the Guineas was run in under 1.40. Results:—

Branson at Last Catkin was the only withdrawal from the first division of the Gordon Handicap, Branson, £1,119, being a good favourite. with fair support forthcoming for Wild Pigeon £1,055, Alonsoa £BO7, Wenday £636 and Restaurant £599. At the start, a good one, Wild Pig«;on was the first to show out, being followed by Josie Melville, Branson, Nassock, Speechless, Daddy’s Girl and Killute, but running to the five furlongs Josie Melville was in the van, closely followed by Speechless, Wild Pigeon, Piet, Branson, Acushla, Wenday, Nassock and Te Tahi. So they raced past the half mile, but on the turn Nassock went ahead and showed the way into the straight from Speechless, Josie Melville, Piet, Branson, Acushla, Wild Pigeon, Te Tahi and Killute. At the distance Branson drew out, soon to be challenged by Wild Pigeon, and ridden out the favourite scored by a coupl€> of lengths. Wild Pigeon was a length in front of Nassock, with Bold Front fourth. Next in order were Piet, Restaurant, Wenday, Alonsoa, Daddy’s Girl, Good Boy, Fiery Lad and Rahepoto.

Paleta All the Way There were seven runners in the Great Northern Guineas, and Laughing Prince was installed a hot favourite, being entrusted with £2,937, against Great Charter’s £1,296 and the Dam-aris-Thaw’s bracket’s £1,035. It was a great race. Laughing Prince was first away, followed by Great Charter, Thaw, Paleta, Damaris, In the •Shade and Catkin. Paleta did not take long to hit. the front, and held sway past the five furlongs from Catkin, Laughing Prince, Damaris, In the Shade, Great Charter and Thaw. At the half mile Paleta was a length and ahalf clear of Catkin, with Damaris and Laughing Prince next. The leader was attended into the straight by Damaris, In the Shade. Great Charter, Catkin. Thaw and Laughing Prince, the field being in pretty close order. Paleta. maintained his advantage, and holding off In the Shade over the last half furlong won by half a length. Thaw finished strongly a length and a-half away third, and Great Charter and Damaris were close up. Then came Laughing Prince, with Catkin a bad last. Won by half a length, one and a-half lengths separating second, and third horses. Time, 2.37. Te Monanui’s Come-back The Mitchelson Cup was a fine race, and signalised the comeback of Te Monaui. Star Stranger was favourite with £2,700 on his chance, being at a short price. Cohesion £1,103, Eden Hall £l,OBl, Royal Mint £964, Te
Monanui £897, and Desert Glow £842, were all fairly well supported. A good start saw Delightment, Te Kara, Tresham and Star Stranger first to turn into the straight the first time. Delightment led past the post from Mask, Desert Glow, Star Stranger, Te Monanui. Eden Hall, Cohesion, Te Kara, Royal Mint, Tresham, Mint Leaf and Lord* Star. At the six furlor.gs Delightment was still making play, attended by Transformer, with Desert Glow, Mask, Star Stranger, Cohesion, Te Monanui, Te Kara, Eden Hall and Royal Mint following in order. There was no change among the leaders at the half mile, and Delightment a.nd Transformer turned for home ah€>ad of Desert. Glow, Cohesion, Mask, Te Monanui, Eden Hall, Star Stranger and Mint Leaf. Delightment hung on in the run home, but at the furlong peg Mask and Te Monanui joined issue, :he last pair fighting out a finish, Te Monanui winning by half a length. Mask was a. couple of lengths ahead of Delightment, who stuck on very well. Next were Star Stranger, who was a neck behind Delightment, and Royal >1 int, Desert Glow, Te Kara, Eden Hall, Mint Leaf, Cohesion and Transformer, with Tresham and Lord Star together last.
