OPOTIKI HOSPITAL X-RAY PLANT The Onotiki Hospital Board at a meeting to-day decided, on the recommendation of Messrs. Vickerman and Lancaster, honorary electricians to the board, to purchase a Victor Watts Xray plant at a cost of £1,128. The whole cost of the machine was raised by a special appeal throughout the county and district. ROTORUA LAUNCHES GOVERNMENT INSPECTION Mr. A. C. Reid, Government inspector of the Marine Department, is making an examination of launches and passenger craft on the lakes. He went to Te Wairo on Thursday and will inspect the Government launches that ply in connection with the round trips.

PAPATOETOE PIGEON CLUB ELECTION OF OFICERS The first meeting of the above club was held at Mr. R. Parker Hill’s residence on Thursday, when it was agreed to compete in races during the coming season. Officers elected were: Air. R. P. Hill, president; Air. T. Muncaster, chairman; Mr. N. Hill, secretary and treasurer. The following were appointed a commitee: Alessrs. E. J. Andrews, N. Aluncaster, Alains Bros., Rex Birdwood, Holmes and F. Muncaster. The club will hold its first race from Huntly on October 1. KORAKONUI TENNIS SEASON OPENED The Korakonui Tennis Club held its annual opening day on Wednesday last. Visitors from the surrounding district attended. A Yankee! tournament was held, providing interesting play. Scores are as follow:

BRIDGE PLATE QUARREL At tha monthly meeting of the Opotfki County Council a heated discussion took place in connection with the inscription plate for the new Waioeka bridge. The special committees appointed by the borough and County Councils met recently and decided on the wording of the inscription, but the name of Air. J. H. Reid, lato county chairman, who had done practically all the work in connection with the bridge negotiations, was omitted. The omission caused much adverse comment throughout the district, ant to-day Or. Hogg moved that the name: of Air. G-. S. Aloody, Mayor of Opotik: and Mr. J. J. Moody, present count: chairman, be struck out and the nam of Mr. J. H. Reid only be placed o the plate. After lengthy argument the moth was carried, only three members vo ing against it. Later in the meeting a letter w; read from the Hon. K. S. William Alinister of Public Works, and men ber for the Bay of Plenty, stating 1 would be able to open the bridge ear in November should the council coi •ider delaying the opening. The council agreed to fix the openii date to suit the convenience of tl Minister.

PAPATOETOE SPORTS PREPARING THE GROUNDS The members of the various Papa toetoe sports bodies are at preseni very busily engaged in preparing theii respective areas for the forthcoming season’s play. In the bowling green the path under the pavilion has been concreted, enabling members to travel dry shod in the wet weather, all the seats have received a new coat of paint, and .everything is spick and span for the official opening to-day. An important addition to the club’s property is the recently-purchased motor lawnmower. which has been in use just over a week, and has proved itself a very profitable addition, a new garage has been erected to house the mower, and a concrete floor has been laid. The tennis courts are receiving a coating of tar and sand, and everything will be ready for the official opening to be held on October 22. In the cricketers’ area, working bees are busy levelling the outfield, and when completed it is considered this will be one of the best suburban grounds in Auckland. OTAHUHU ~PUBLIC SCHOOL GOAL-THROWING COMPETITION In order to bring forward any of the members of the Otahuhu Public basketball team who excel in the art of goal-throwing, a competition was held in the school grounds this week, when over 20 members met, and, standing 15 feet from the goal, had three attempts at goaling the ball at different angles. Fanny Phllp, a midget member of the team, won with 100 per cent, of goals, and four of the competitors tied for second place with two successful shots out of three. MUSICAL COMEDY .ERFORMANCE AT TAMAKI The East Tamaki Public Hall was filled to capacity on Wednesday night, when the Howick-Pakuranga Musical Society staged the musical comedy, “Barbarossa of Barbary." This was preceded by a play in one act entitled "Collaborators.” played by Miss Dagmar Jansen and Mr. Clyde Hensen. Ihe main item of the programme was well received and encores were the order of the evening’s entertainment. It is hard to differentiate between the members, as one and all played their parts well.

BENEFIT CONCERT HELPING BENEVOLENT FUNDS The first concert of a series to raise funds for the Papatoetoe Benevolent Society was held in the Town Hall, Papatoetoe, on Thursday night, when a large gathering congregated to witness two playettes arranged and acted by the Papatoetoe Literary Society, and also to listen to the band, which rendered a number of selections under the baton of ALr. C. Shore, who, on this occasion, made his last appearance as bandmaster of the Papatoetoe Town Band. The pieces played by the band were: Selection, “Carisbrook”; march, “Blaze Away”; quartet, “Remembrance"; march, “Cottonopolis.” Air. De Clifton takes over the position of bandmaster at Papatoetoe from Monday next. The two plays staged by the society were well acted and met with a good reception. They were "Poached Eggs and Pearls" and “My Turn Next." CLAY BIRD SHOOTING TAUMARUNUI CLUB The Taumarunui Rod and Gun Club held Its lifth shoot on grounds at the saleyards. The programme included a “quail drive.” which provided very Interesting shooting. The officials were: Handicapper. Mr. A. G. Riches; secretary, Mr- F. Cox; scorer, Mr. G. Hickton. The results were as follow: Ten-bird Handicap for Mrs. McKay’s trophy, and a sweepstake.—J. Worsley, 15 yards, 9 birds, 1; W. Hughes, 20 yards, 9 birds, 2. In the shoot-off Worsley won. Ten-bird Handicap for Mr. Hick-.on’s Cup, and a sweepstake.—J. Richards,

14 yards, 7 birds, 1; B. McElroy, 12 yards, 7 birds, 2; R. Harris, 14 yards, 7 birds, 3. The shoot-off resulted in the three competitors being placed in the above order.

Five-bird “Quail Drive," for Mrs. Fraser's trophy, and a sweepstake.—F. E. Cox and W. Hughes tied with four birds each- Hughes won the shoot-off. Mr. J. Brown, the club president, presented the winners with their trophies, and thanked the donors for their generosity in supporting the club.
