HOPE’S IDENTITY
END OF COURT CASE DECISION NEXT WEEK Hope maintenance case was concluded at the Police Court yesterday afternoon. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., reserved his decision, which will be given next Thursday. When hearing was continued, Mrs. Hope was under the cross-examina-tion of Mr. S. L. Patterson, who appeared for the Crown. She denied having signed a statement: taken down by Chief-Detective R. Ward, but she admitted that the signature to it resembled her own. She denied that she had said her husband was a marine. What she meant was that he had been in the merchant service during the war. Mr. J. J. Sullivan, counsel for Hope, said that he was certain Hope’s identity had been mistaken. He had received a cable from the Manchester Dry Docks stating that two John Hopes load been employed there in 1920. He had also cabled the shipping authorities concerning Hope, and he expected a reply soon. Mr. Pattersion, in a short address to the court, summarised the evidence against Hope. The magistrate, In reserving his judgment, said that the evidence would require careful consideration and he would give his decision next Thursday. In the meantime, he hoped Mr. Sullivan would receive a reply to his cable.
