LITTLE NEW BLOOD

IN WELCOME STAKES

SHOULD MAKE FOR GREAT RACE

THE interest taken already in the Welcome Stakes tomorrow has been very keen, the presence of a few outside youngsters that have done well in their few outings this season promising to make the classic a bit more difficult for backers.

NO less than six of the 22 left in will be making: their first appearance at Ellerslie in a race, some of them being down to have their first race. That was the position at the time of writing. Most attention will be focussed on the three winners—Knightlike, who captured in convincing style the Wanganui Debutante Stakes; Prodice, the winner of the Avondale Stakes, a pleasing effort it was, too, and full of merit; and Orewa. who displayed gameness to got up and win the Nursery Handicap at Ellerslie last Monday week- Unfortunately Raasay, winner in both starts at Napier and Hastings on Monday and S aturday of last week, has been drawnRELATED TO RUNNYMEDE Raasay d:id not have very much to beat at either place, but he did all that was required of him. At Hastings he conceded his field both weight and a start, and then beat his opponents pointless. When it is said tha>t this fine chestnut colt is a half brother (by Lord Quex) to the once brilliant. Runnymede, it cannct be taken as anything other than was expected to find him doing so wel'. What happened to Runnymede when he got to Australia is a matter for conjecture. He lost all form, and probably it was because he failed to become acclimatised. Raasay will be fully tried out in his next attempt. in which he will be at Trentharn, and it is expected by those who

elements debarred them from the pleasure of seeing a sweet mover in Knightlike, but conditions permitting. the

Paladin colt will to-morrow have the* chance of proving himself once more. Perhaps the riders of the other youngsters in the Welcome Stokes will also get a splendid view of Knightlike nearing the finish! Outside of the three winners to bo seen out to-morrow, quite a few of those engaged have been placed this season, so with the form of these ten to go upon there should be some spirited speculation. These placed youngsters are Shot Silk, Second Wind, Freehold, Prince Humphrey and Chit. The winner of to-morrow’s event should net come from outside the nine already mentioned, unless a big surprise is in store for racegoers. DOUBLY REPRESENTED Several stables are doubly represented in the event. F. Davis has Second Wind and Marion’s Birthday; J. T. Jamie son has Prince Humphrey and Perception: J. Williamson has King Val and Armenia; and owner-trainer W. C- Ring has Orewa and Moehau. The following list contains full details of those engaged in to-morrow’s Wellcome Stakes, together with the names of the owners and trainers, the latter appearing in parentheses at the end of each reference:

ha.vo seen him in action that he is a real good colt. In the meantime the Ellerslle race will keep us interested. brilliant knightlike Ellerslie patrons have seen what Prodice and Orewa are capable of. The . . . * 1.,-,,! list- in
