PLUNKET CARNIVAL
AT TE AWAMUTU A meeting- to further the candidature of Babies Locke and Williams was held on Tuesday evening, in connection with the forthcoming carnival. A large committee was set up and several matters of importance arranged. The following officials were elected: Chairman, Mr. R. Laurie; secretary, Mr. A. Tailby; treasurer, Mr. L. Shepherd; executive, Mrs. Wood, Mrs. Reidpath, Messrs. Blair, Finch, Williams, the chairman, secretary and treasurer. It was suggested that the two committees furthering the candidature of the respective babies, meet and endeavour to arrange for a ladies’ pushball match on Saturday next, half of the proceeds to go to each of the two committees. Mrs. Reidpath promised to give an evening for adults at her residence on Tuesday, October 11, and an' afternoon for children on Saturday, October 15. It was decided to hold a gardenparty in Dr. Blundell’s grounds on Wednesday, October 12, and a bridge and cribbage party at a later date Arrangements had been made to obtain the services of a first-class concert party from Hamilton, the concert to take place on Monday, October 31. Exception was taken to the central executive organising entertainments for the central fund. It was pointed out that the committees of the respective candidates were set up for that purpose, while the central executive was set up to watch the affairs of the carnival. Mrs. H. De L. Peake presided over the monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu branch of the Plunket Society on Monday. It was reported by the secretary that the incorporation papers had been received, also an explanation of the reason for the rise of the annual levy to £ls 3s 9d. Karitane Products, Ltd., wrote stating that the price of emulsion a case of 60 tins would in future be £7 3s 9d, plus local carriage. The committee was in hopes of receiving a donation from the T. G. McCarthy Trust. It has been ascertained however,, that only those branches of the Plunket Society within the Wellington Province were eligible for participation in its benefactions. Owing to the baby carnival dates clashing with the Auckland conference on October 29, the invitation from the Auckland branch had to be declined. Nurse McLeod reported 14 new cases for the month of September. Sixty visits had been paid to the homes and there had been 125 visits to the rooms by adults, 90 by babies, and 24 by older children—a total of 299 visits. Telephone calls numbered 33, babies under supervision 135, older children The committee has l?een encouraged by the ready response for funds taken up by the residents throughout the district. The increase in the box donations for the month, which totalled £1 7s sd, was another proof of the appreciation of the society’s work.
