ST. JOHN AMBULANCE
DOMINION EXECUTIVE MEETS GOVERNOR ELECTED PATRON Press Association. WELLINGTON, To-day. The Dominion executive of the St. John Ambulance Association met this week, Sir Heaton Rhodes presiding. Representatives were present from Auckland, Canterbury, West Coast Timaru, Wanganui, Wellington and Dunedin. Letters were received from the Duke of Connaught and Lieut.-Colonel W oolryche-Pero wne, appealing for funds to repair earthquake damage to the ophthalmic hospital in Jerusalem. These were referred to Colonel Barclay to communicate with the centres. St. John’s Gate wrote approving of the issue of a railway certificate. After discussion on letters from New Plymouth and Wanganui, it was decided to leave the allocation of the Government grant to the standing committee. His Excellency the GovernorGeneral, Sir Charles Fergusson, was appointed patron and head of the Order in the Dominion. An Invercargill remit relating to the issue of certificates to miners who may not have passed the approved examination was referred to the standing committee for action. The same committee will also communicate with centres on the subject of the establishment of a commandery in New Zealand. It was decided that the executive meet half-yearly, but a suggestion that meetings should be held alternately in the North and South Islands was left to the next annual meeting. Major-General Young, commandant of the New Zealand Forces, wrote agreeing that a certain portion of service in the St. John Ambulance Association be allowed to count toward military service subject to a certificate that such service has been efficiently performed. Such trainees, however, are not to be wholly exempt from military duty, but would be required to do two weeks’ training each year in the ambulance corps in their respective districts. as a? * » %rw
