Trial Gallops at Ellerslie To-Day
Light Rain Has Little Effect on Course
THE final gallops at Ellerslie this morning were got through successfully, the light rain that fell intermittently having little effect. There was some particularly interesting work, which was witnessed by a fair number of spectators.
COUPLE of hours before training operations commenced light rain set in, but it had very little effect on the course other than to deaden the going a. bit. The course proper was again thrown open, the trestles being about 50ft out. FIRST OUT The first to work was Gascony, his task being six furlongs. He ran the first two in 27 3-5, the three in 40 1-5, and the full distance in 1.21 3-5. He finished well, but was blowing a bit. Catkin was sent twice round on the tan, coming home over the last three in 43, and was pulling hard. Sleepy Sol showed plenty of dash in beating Gala Day and Thursby at tho end of seven furlongs. The first two were cut out in 25 3-5, the three in 40, half-miLe in 53 1-5, and Sleepy Sol left the full seven behind in 1.34 1-5, with Gala Day close up. Both of them pleased. Great Charter strode out well over five furlongs, finishing easily in 1.8 2-5, the last four taking 54. Sir Archie was not hurried to run five furlongs in 1.9 1-5, the final four taking 53. GISBORNE HORSE WELL The Mitchelson Cup candidate Cohesion went seven furlongs, and gave a very pleasing display. Timed over the last six the chestnut cut out the first furlong in a smart 12 1-5, two in 26 2-5, and the three in 39 2-5, finishing over ta€> last three in. 41, making 1.20 2-5 for the journey. He pulled up well after a smart trial, tine full seven furlongs being done in 1.34. King Emerald moved very freely in a spin over half a mile in 51 1-5, the last three in 38 4-5. Luxurious was going better than a companion at the end of six furlongs in 1.23 2-5, the first three occupying 41 1-5. Slump jumped off from the sevenfurlongs and was picked up at the six by Creation, and there was little separating them at the finish in 1.36 3-5, the last six seeing 1.23 3-5 registered. WENT VERY FAST As usual Aussie, with plates on, gave the spectators something to think about. He conceded Baillymoy 11. a start when they hopped off at the six furlongs, and then after being wide out on the home turn he finished in front. They ran the usually slow first
two furlcngs in 25 3-5, and the three in 38, finishing over the final three furlongs in 41 1-5. The full journey, was encompassed in 1.19 1-5, easily the best before breakfast, while Aussie’s own time would be a couple of ticks faster. Ballymoy 11. moved well throughout, and of course Aussie pleased as much as ever. Restaurant and Double Mint were paired over five furlongs, the former finishing in front in 1.8 2-5. Double Mint is improving. Piet was in advance of Serang and Brampton at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1-22, the first three taking 40 2- Both the last-named could have done better. RIDDEN OUT Star Comet and Judge’s Box, ridden out, were together at the post well clear of War Officer, who was easing up at the end of six furlongs. The first two took 26 4-5 and the three 39 1-5, tiie full distance occupying 1.21 3Acushla and Speechless left seven furlongs behind in 1.37, the last foux in 58. Frowning Beauty went six furlongs in 1.9 3—5,. hitting out freely. SMART YOUNGSTERS Second Wind and Knightlike were sprinted three furlongs. They were at top when they got to that peg. and came home in 38 3-5. Both hit out very freely, and could have done much better. Knightlike covered more ground and Second Wind finished green, running about a bit toward the end. Shot Silk went half a mile in 53 2-5, and was not bustled. The Leighton youngster looks a bit big, and is evidently in need of a race. Avon Court was well ahead of Nankin Blue at the end of four furlongs run in 53 2-5, but both could have done better. Catonian sprinted home three furlongs in an even 38 3-5. SMART HALF MILES Civility dashed over four furlongs by herself in 50 2-5, hitting out very freely- She is obviously in fine order for her Ellerslie engagements. Laughing Prince was being shaken up at the end of half a mile in 53 3-5, and apparently was inclined to loaf.
Autorane went five furlongs in 1.9, and was not asked to do his best. Lysander moved freely in a spin over six furlongs, cutting out the first three in 40 3-5, and the six in 1.23 2-5. Grand Knight rolled into his task in fine style when sent with Joy King four furlongs, which they covered in 51. Both went well, with Grand Knight pleasing more. RUANUrS FIVE The Limond three-year-old Ruanui, a half brother to the Thorn, was responsible for a nice effort over five furlongs. He negotiated the first couple in 26 3-5. and the final three in 41 1-5. making 1.7 4-5 for the five furongs. He went very smoothly throughout. Golden Wedding ran five furlongs in 1.11, the last four in 55 4-5. The filly was slow off the mark. Master Noel and Te Tahi came home over four furlongs in 53. STAR STRANGER’S ROUND Star Stranger was sent again to cover a round of nine furlongs. He did not appear to be going so well over the early stages, but was hitting- out in great style over the last furlong. He was picked up more or less successfully at the six furlongs by Star God, and they finished on terms. The first furlong took 14, two furlongs 29 1-5, three furlongs 42 3-5, half mile 56, five furlongs, 1.11, six furlongs 1.24 3-5, the nine furlongs being completed in 2.6 2- Star Stranger pleased by the manner in which he was running along at the end. Nassock and Papatu left the first two of six furlongs behind in 28, and finished in 1.21 2-5. It was not a bad effort. YOUNGSTER GOES WELL Freehold and Volimond jumped off from the three-furlong post, and they raced together until fifty yards from the finish, when Freehold, under pressure, left the filly and was about three lengths ahead at the judge’s box. The three furlongs were cut out by the Absurd gelding in 38, the last two by the winner being run in a merry 23 3- It was a fine effort on the part of Freehold. TOOK IT EASY Archeno ran six furlongs easily in 1.24, the last five in 1.8 3-5. Wyoming beat Valour at the end of four furlongs in 52 4-5, and Branson did the same distance in 54, going comfortably. There was not much between Rahepoto and Killute over six furlongs in 1.22 l-5» the first three in 41. Schorr and Hone Heke covered four furlongs in 53 8-5, the former going the better, and Lord Guy ran three in 41 2-5. Both were going nicely at the end, with Te Monanui, on the inside, giving an improved display. Tresham was full of running at the finish. He has had any amount of racing to tune him up for the Mitchelson Cup. Royal Mint and Mint Leaf went once round, being picked up at the five furlong.s by Nastori, and after a * nice gallop Nastori and Mint Leaf were together just ahead of Royal Mint, all three showing up in a favourable light. in 1.12 1-5, and the six in 1.25 2-5. They did the final three in 42. and the nine furlongs took them 2.7 2-5. Chaplin) jumping well in a similar schooling lesson. SCRATCHINGS Grand Knight was scratched at 11.10 a.m. to-day for the Flying Handicap. TROTTING AT EPSOM GOOD WORK TO-DAY PACERS GO FAST The rain whicn Tell during the early hours of the morning did not seriously affect the training track at Alexandra Park, and trainers, with candidates engaged at the forthcoming Auckland fixture, seized the opportunity of getting in some fast work. There was a good sprinkling of track watchers and they were well repaid for their enthusiasm, as several interesting bouts were witnessed. While the track was not of a record-breaking nature, some good clips were recorded. SATISFACTORY TEST Van Rich (H, Kinnimont) and Gold Jacket (A. Richardson) were the first to hit the trail at a fast pace, the mission being twelve furlongs. Van Rich had the advantage for a mile, but his stable mate was going the better at the finish. The pace was on all the way and the work-out was satisfactory for both horses. AT TOP SPEED Ben Lomond (A. Dyer),-Nelson Tasker (A. Ayres) and Jewel Pointer (J. Shaw) were stepped off from the mile post, Ben being slightly in front of Nelson Tasker, with Jewel Pointer a length behind. At the end of the first half Nelson Tasker and Ben Lomond W€>re sailing along at a high clip, when the latter tangled. Jewel Pointer moved up and two furlongs from home was evens with Ayres’s charge. From here to the post a great battle ensued, the handsome pair finishing together, with honours, if anything, in favour of Nelson Tasker. The last half was cut out at a great bat, the pair being at top speed. It was an attractive display. Uncle Bert (J. Lynch) and Toll Chimes (F. Smith) went off together for a mile and a-half bout, Toll acting the role of pacemaker. The first mile was executed at a useful pace and here Ben Lomond joined issue. The latter soon sped away from his companions and finished well in front, his half-mile being a good effort. Toll Chimes had. Uncle Bert doing his best till a furlong from home, where the Adams Memorial Cup winner asserted his superiority and finished with a slight advantage. It was a genuine work-out and both horses acquitted themselves well. Ben Lomond showed splendid speed, but was sore after his effort. OTHERS ON THE JOB Black Lila (G. Phipps) was geared up and slipped over a mile pleasingly, the pace being on over the last four furlongs. Riua. Per© (J. Gee) gave a solid exhibition when asked to step over eight furlongs. He made no mistakes and was showing a good turn of speed. Anselm (H. Kinnimont) had the gear on and slipped over a mile in fine style, the last half being executed in fast time. TROTTERS IMPRESS Roma Bingen (H. Kinnimont) trotted at a sound clip for several circuits and though not asked to put up time gave a nice display. Foter Dean (J. Shaw) slipped over 1- furlongs at a good clip, registering a nice burst of speed over the last few furlongs. Anseline (J. Gee) pleased the onlookers by the brisk manner in which she stepped out for the same distance, ohe made no errors and had good pac» on all the way. INANGAHUA CLUB ABANDONS FIXTURE EVIDENT LACK OF SUPPORT Press Association. REEFTON, To-day. The Inangahua (Reefton) Trotting Club has abandoned its annual race meeting, which was set down for October 15. The Inangahua Trotting Club has been operating In Reefton for many years and during its later period has been “up against it. The club usually raced 3 1 the conclusion of the Christmas and New Year West Coast circuit, but as 12 days’ racing and trotting preceded the Inangahua fixture, and the holidays had concluded, the date was not suitable for a successful fixture. In 1925 the meeting was held on December 30, but as it was sandwiched in tightly between Westport and Greymouth meetings, an objection was raised by the former club to the date, which was detrimental to the Westport fixture. The following season Inangahua experimented with a spring fixture, racing prior to Greymouth, and had adopted the same policy this year. Evidently there was insufficient support from owners, as, after extending the date of entries, the club has now abandoned the meeting. —“ABAYDOS.” CAULFIELD MEETING FINAL GALLOPS Reed. 1.25 p.m. MELBOURNE, To-day. j The trial gallops were held in fine ; weather at Flemington on the grass, i Piastoon dicil a mile in 1.50, Finisbiiry | beat Fen tola oyer nine furlongs in
