A Review for Business Men

ON THE 'CHANGE HIKURANGI COALS WFAKER OHINEMURIS ACTIVE Mining, and Ohinemuris in particular, was the centre of interest on the Auckland 'Change at this morning’s call. Frequent sales of Ohinemuris have been put through since the receipt of the news from the mine, and the market reached its present zenith this morning witli sales at 8s 6d. At mid-day considerable activity was red corded, and the shares were done at e 8 S 3d, falling with subsequent sales to 7s 9d and buyers withdrawing to 7s 7diS Other sections are quiet. A better tone prevails in Government bonds and inscribed stock. The market for the latter has a slightly firming tendency. In miscellaneous, Auckland Amusement are slightly easier. In coals, Hikurangis have weakened to see sales at 3s Id, with further buyers in at that figure. FEWER BUILDINGS ERECTED IN 1927 RETURNS FOR NINE MONTHS A decrease of £211,090 in the value of building permits for the nine months of this year is shown in the returns furnished by the city engineer. The figures this year are £962,795, against £1,173,885 last year. The period of depression was in September, when a reduction of £151,901 is shown on the same period of last year. For the erection of new dwellings, permits totalled 354 for nine months an average each month of 39 houses For the corresponding period last year the number was 478, or a monthly average of 53. The table gives the returns for the first nine months of this year, with last year’s figures for comparison:

DISTRICT STOCK SALES NORTHERN VALUES (From Our Own Correspondent) WHANG AREI, Wednesday. Walter Wakelin, Whangarei. reports:— At Parua Bay, yesterday, 120 head of cattle were yarded and practically all sold under the hammer. Prices realised were as follow: —Store cows, £3 5s to £3 17s; cows and calves, up to £5 ss; 35-year steers, £5 ss; 18months steers, £3 12s 6d; yearling steers, £2; empty heifers, £2 11s; dairy cows and heifers were in good demand, and good heifers brought £5 10s to £7 11s. A line of hoggets made 28s. At Maungatapere on Monday last, 50 head of cattle, 70 pigs and 50 sheep were yarded. Prices realised were as follow:—Store cows, £3 12s Sd to £4; yearling steers, £3; dairy heifers, £4 10s to 10s; Jersey bulls. £4 10s to £l2 12s; sound-mouthed ewes with lambs at foot, £1 11s 6d; hoggets, £1 os 3d to £1 7s 6d; store pigs up to £1 4s; weaners, 10s. TAUMARUNUIVALUES Cattle were yarded freely at fortnightly sale on Tuesday, but the demand was not so keen as at :ne last sale, and a number of lines were passed in. Sheep were fewer in number and sold at recent rates. Prices were:—Shorn fat wethers, 225; woolly fat wethers, 27s 3d: woolly store ewes, 20s; hoggets, 13s 3d, 14s 2d to 20s. Cattle: Fat cows, £5 17s 6d to £7 14s; fat heifers, to £6 ss; steers £6 3s; two-year-old heifers, £4 10s; cows and calves, £3 7s. Young cattle were not in demand. COUNTRY SALES The New Zealand Doan and Mercantile Company report holding sales during the past week at Westfield, Papakura (2), Pukekohe. Cattle were yarded in large numbers and there was a good demand for dairy cows, heifers close to profit, backward springers and good quality empty yearling to 18-months heifers. Good herd bulls are also in demand, and the firm reports a most successful sale of these at Pukekohe. The demand for store steers has fallen off somewhat and although in places recent rates were obtained, generally values were easier.
