Farmer Fined For Betting.— Arthur Selby, a Tirau farmer, was fined £2 at Hamilton yesterday for betting with a. bookmaker. A Stolen Boiler.—Thomas Mars-fi-banks, aged 37, charged at the Police Court to-day with stealing a boiler va.lued at £l, was remanded until Thursday. M ners Meet Gas.—While sinking a shaft on Old Boulder claim, Waihi miners encountered bad gas. One man. Roberts, was overcome, but a rescue was effected. Large House Burned; — A roomed house occupied by Mr. William Munro was burned to the ground at Utiku on Tuesday evening. Mrs. Munro and child had a narrow escape. Drinking After Hours. —George Fletcher, Bartholomew Mcllroy and John Ellis were fined £1 at Hamilton yesterday for being on licensed premises after hours. Religious Education. —A meeting convened by the Hamilton Ministers’ Association decided to form a “Waikato School of Religious Education.” Meetings will be held weekly. Kaituna River Mouth. —The mouth of the Kaituna River has been turned into the old entrance. It is expected that a deeper channel will be scoured out in the course of a few days. at Takapuna Grammar School arc to be permitted to use a cricket pitch on Devonport Domain on Saturday mornings, the Domain Board being very anxious that Xorth Shore boys should be catered for in their own territory. Concrete Cricket Pitch. —The Waitakaruru Domain Board has accepted an offer from the Waitaka.ruru Cricket Club to lay down a concrete pitch on condition that the cement is provided. A charge of £2 10s was made for the season. Clothing Stolen.—James Casley. aged 22, appeared at the Police Court today and admitted stealing clothing valued at £2 6s 6d. He was fined 40s. Lewis Henry Dryland, who admitted stealing clothing valued at £4 15s. was fined £5. A “Won’t Work.” —Thomas Rogers, aged 42, was charged at the Police I Court to-day with being idle and dis- ; orderly. Chief-Detective Cummings said that accused would not work. He was sentenced to three months* imprisonment. Catholic Queen Carnival.—Great interest is being manifest€d in the Pukekohe Catholic queen carnival, and the positions of the aspirants for the honour are: Puni Queen, Miss T. Rogers. 1: !
