POLITICAL NOTES

(Continued from Page 10.) Made in New Zealand The suggestion that the Labour Party might, through its influence with trades. unions, do more than it did to help New Zealand manufacturers, was made by Mr. D. Jones, Ellesmere, in the House of Representatives this afternoon. Mr. E. J. Howard, Christchurch South: We have been trying to get the "made in New Zealand” brand for the last 30 years. Mr. Jones said that manufacturers had objected that the brand would affect their sales, and many of them were prejudiced against the brand. “But I feel sure,” said Mr. Jones, “that the Labour organisations could be of immense service in New Zealand if they would get every trade union in New Zealand to urge its members to use New Zealand-made goods." * * * Bills to Proceed With one minor machinery amendment, the Land Laws Amendment Bill, introduced Into the House of Representatives by the Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister of Lands, is to be allowed to proceed. This recommendation was made by the Lands Committee to-day. The Tongariro National Park Amendment Bill is to be allowed to proceed without amendment. To-day’s Business The House of Representatives will be occupied to-day, after formal business has been disposed of, with the committee stage of the Customs Amendment Bill, which probably will provoke considerable further discussion. Land Law Arbitration The Land Laws Amendment Bill was reported to the House from the Lands Committee with the arbitration clause altered. Whereas it was provided that umpires should be magistrates in cases of arbitration under the Land Laws Act, this is altered to read that only when the arbitrators cannot agree upon the appointment of an umpire i shall a magistrate be chosen to act.
