TO DAY IS YOM KIPPUR—DAY OF ATONEMENT

All the faithful in Jewry are gathered in the Synogogue on the Day of Atonement. This is the one Jay of humiliation or expiation commanded by the Mosaic law.

The Rabbi, Dr. S. A. Goldstein, is presiding at the service at the Auckland Synagogue. The fast will not be concluded until this evening. Yom Kippur Ts said to have been instituted either on account of the sin and punishment of Nadab and Abihu, or as commemorating the day on which Moses came down from Sinai with the tablets of the law and denounced the people for the worship of the golden calf. It is observed on the tenth day of the seventh month of the Sacred Year.
