Cairns will ride Tookarby in the Caulfield Cup. Mr. Sol Green’s horses, Gothic, Son o’ Mine, and Valdes, are to be returned to Melbourne on Wednesday. TRACK GALLOPS The weather was favourable this morning for training operations. At Flemington Valorem did 10 furlongs on the tan in 2.21. Gleamlight and Epilogue ran a mile in 1.49; Loch Tav four furlongs in 51*; Seventh Heaver 10 in 2.21; Spear Maiden four furlongs in 53; Eve’s Apple six furlongs in 1.20: The Lance and Taciturn six furlongs in 1.22. Naos went foui furlongs in 52. Devonshire and Mote did useful work. Imitation cantered. Indications point to J. W. Pankhurs taking Equerry, Night March and Insolence to race at the Dunedin spring meeting, and it may be stated that th< trio are well forward in condition foi this period of the season in Souhland comments the Invercargill scribe, “Sii Modred.” Claiming a New Zealand Cui nomination Equerry has, so far, survived a satisfactory preliminary course of training, but his chances in the bif Riccarton event cannot be guaged unti he has raced at Wingatui and the Gor< Racing Club’s spring meeting, if thi: is the early programme allotted tin son of Clarenceux. Night March ii down to take his place in the field foi the McLean Stakes at Dunedin abou a fortnight hence and a great deal ointerest for southern people will attacl to his display, as he is looked upor as a colt who may next season aspir< to Derby rank. He can hardly be a his best for his opening engagement but enough has been seen of him on th< S.R.C. tracks to indicate that he is £ youngster of much more than average promise and as such his future is replete with possibilities. Despite tin fact that he has been growing of late Pankhurst has kept him free from ! soreness and he should be a greatly improved racer after his W’ingatu engagements have been fulfilled. Two year-olds reflecting Derby promise ar< not common in the south, but at th< present time two youngsters wh< received their early education on th« Invercargill tracks can be classed ir this category, viz., the colt Night Marcl and the gelding Silver Paper. Th< third of Pankhurst’s pupils destinec for early racing is the three-vear-olc filly. Insolence, and it can be said witl truth that the daughter of Solferinc is carrying an obvious allowance 01 racing condition and is one of the mosi forward gallopers prepared here. Tin question in her case is as to whethei she is good enough to win early anc in answer to this it may be stated tha she moves sweetly and stays on rathe] welL
