It is estimated that the bookmakers lost £IOO,OOO over the success of Vaals in the Epsom Handicap and Murillo in the Metropolitan. One leading firm of bookmakers had to pay out £40,000 on two wagers, besides other heavy obligations. All of the bookmakers were more or less hit,, particularly over the doubles.
