MAILED SUMMONSES
BIG SAVING TO STATE USE OF REGISTERED POST (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. When the Magistrates Amendment Bill is put on the Statute Book a sum approximating £14.768 will be saved to the State annually, because this was the amount which was paid out during last year in mileage costs through tlie service of summonses. This Bill, which was brought down for second reading in the House of Representatives this evening, makes possible the
service of a summohs by registered post. An agreement has been made with the postal authorities, so that precautions for the effective working of the system are taken, while the stipulation is made that a registered letter has to be delivered direct to the hands of the addressee. The Hon. F. J. Rolleston. Minister of Justice, explained in the Mouse that the service of a summons by registered post had been tried out last y«:ar in amendments to the Justices of the Peace Act, and had proved so successful that extension to the Magistrate's Court was proposed. The Bill also provided for the extension of the amount of jurisdiction in the Magistrate’s Court litigation from £2OO to £3OO. The Bill was read a second time and referred to the Statutes Revision Committee.
