DRIVEN OFF ROAD
BUS OWNERS PETITION FOR COMPENSATION POINT CHEVALIER SERVICE (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday, A claim of £3,403 is made upon the Government by Mr. S. H. Gallagher and- Mr. R. Stirling, of Auckland, as compensation for loss of their motor omnibus business as a result of allegedly unfair competition by the Auckland City Council in the service to Point Chevalier in a petition presented to Parliament to-day by Mr. H. G. R. Mason, Eden. Petitioners state that in December, 1925, without any warning to them, the Auckland City Council began to run an omnibus in opposition to petitioners at reduced fares, and petitioners lost £2,403 in the succeeding year. In 1926 they were compelled by the Motor Omnibus Traffic Act to withdraw their buses and offer them for sale to the City Council, which was precluded by the Act from taking; goodwill into account. Petitioners therefore claim £I,OOO for goodwill and £2,403 for loss of business through competition.
