NEW REGENT
“MISS N.Z. 1927” FINALISTS The 10 finalists in the “Miss New Zealand 1927” screen contest, the greatest competition of its kind ever conceived in the Dominion, are appearing nightly at the New Regent. A series of small sketches are presented by the girls, who represent all Idle principal centres of New Zealand. Voting has now been completed in all the cities with the exception of Auckland,, Voting will not commence here, however, until next week. The result of the contest will be known on Friday week. One of the girls appearing before Regent audiences this week will be “Miss New Zealand.” This young New Zealander will have the honour of representing her country at Hollywood. Who is she? . That is the question asked nightly at the Regent. In “The Fourth Commandment,” now being screened at the New Regent, Robert Agnew gives a studied characterisation of “Sonny” as a man. "Sonny” is created in the picture by four-year-old Wendell Phillips Franklin with such marked mannerisms that only the most accomplished actor could imitate them. The resemblance between the two is startling, nd Agnew’s remarkable ability completes the characterisation with surprising reality. Agnew spent many days with the little fellow, studying closely his movements and expressions, and particularly the whimsical “pie face” smile, which is a marked feature of his many scenes. Realising that the smile would be pronounced characteristic of the child in later years, Agnew, under the direction of Emory Johnson, who produced the drama of mother love for Universal, used many feet of film in rehearsing it before actual work was begun. Belle Bennett a.chieves splendid results in a mother role, while brilliant in her support are such players as Mary Carr, June Marlowe, Henry Victor, Claire Du Brey, Kathleen Myers, Knute Erickson, Brady Kline, and Frank Elliott.
