OTAKI TRIALS

Manawatu Hunt Meeting

FIELDS FOR TO-MORROW

THIS week is a busy one for sportsmen, commencing with the Manawatu Hunt Club’s meeting to-morrow, this fixture being followed by Kurow on Thursday, Otaki on Friday and Saturday, and Auckland and Oamaru on Saturday and Monday. The Manawatu card is reviewed below.

Although only a hunt meeting, tomorrow’s racing at the Awapuni course at Palmerston North is going to be most interesting, for there are many good horses engaged. The going will be good, and so, with nice fields paid up for, the prospects are for the Manawatu Hunt Club holding a splendid fixture.

Bismoor .. 9 12 Sir Fanciful would only have to be somewhere near his old form to show his opponents up, but he is not getting younger, and in addition he has been off the scene for some time. PINK ROSE should never have been beaten at Wanganui a month ago, and on this occasion owner-trainer Oney Cox should be compensated. The danger may come from BALLYFARNON. Next on the card is the

At the recent Marton meeting FEE SIMPLE was made a hot pot in the Novice Stakes the second day. and

running very green was beaten into second place. That showing was promising for a first out, and if the Acre three-year-old has improved as expected he should make things merry for VIGILANCE and ARO DE VAL. The principal jumping contest follows. This is the MANAWATU HUNT CUP STEEPLES 3 miles. Maidos . . 11 10 Birkenose . . 9 13 Rayo . . . 10 6 Risk ... 9 7 Frisco Jack 10 5 Scornful ..97 Craigowan .10 3 Lightmore . 9 7 The Curragh 10 2

Maidos has been most consistent of late, although his best efforts have been registered over shorter courses than to-morrow’s test. Rayo is too “iffy,” but ’Frisco Jack won well at Dannevirke and is highly spoken of. The Curragli disappoinetd at Wanganui, following on a good win at Marton, and Birkenose does not seem as good as he was last year. Down at the bottom is old Scornful, and a win for this hardy customer would be popular. MAIDOS and ’FRISCO .JACK appear to be the most likely to be sent out favourites. The hack sprinters will have their say in the AOKAUTERE HACK HANDICAP. 6 furlongs.

Arch Arrow has been showing some pace in his races of late, and so, too, has Abisogne, who has been placed several times. The Raider sprang a big surprise when he won from Fee Simple at Marton, while Henna is a useful sort. Lin Arlington has not been heard of for some time, and Keddar, a

good winner at Hastings, has been penalised half a stone. - Fee Simple may not run, and of the others there are Archon, Borseline and Shining Star.

1 There are some fair sorts left in, and backers may decide on favouring THE RAIDER, KEDDAR and ABISOGNE.

Imperial Brigadier Spark ..83 Bill ... 7 7 The topweight is to make her first appearance since she failed at Ellerslie last Easter, and much interest will be taken in her effort. She has been in work at Hawera for some time, and the indications are that she will run well, for she is not overburdened. Crown Area also is to reappear, and he might require the race. Another Acre gelding, Star Area, performed fairljwell at Hastings on Saturday. and may do better here. Novar was backed in the big event at Hastings, and was well beaten, but he must be coming to hand with the racing he is getting. Imperial Spark is still below form, and Tame Fox has shown a wonderful return of his former speed. However, it is doubtful whether the track will be heavy enough for him. Rouex was a winner at Napier recently, and he would have been on top now had he been at all consistent. Anolo and Brigadier Bill appeal most of the four at the bottom. LADY DESMOND, STAR AREA and ANOLO will be heavily supported. Another big jumping contest follows the handicap, this being the

"Waiau Lad has shown form over Ellerslie country, and he might be forward enough to trouble his opponents. Rayo is also engaged, and his display earlier in the day will be a guide. The same applies to 'Frisco Jack and others. Ruby Ring is a likely candidate on Marton running, and although he is by no means reliable he appears to stand a show here, especially with the dangerous division hav-

ing a hard race earlier in the day. RUBY RING and WAIAU LAD are two that will not lack support. The fourth obstacle event on a sporting programme is the KIWITEA HACK HURDLES.

Bevis made an auspicious first appearance over sticks, and since then he has failed to improve. Peshwa, although no champion, is at least consistent. and then there are Vexatious and Revel, both likely sorts Benmure can go fast, and he is reported as being able to get over the sticks quite well. PESHWA and REVEL, are two that will be well backed. The final event is the

There are 13 left in. and more than half claim a prior engagement, so at present it is even impossible to forecast the starters. ANOLO would appear to have earned the post of favourite, but it is quite possible that in his present good form he will take on Lady Desmond and company in the bigger event. In the absence of the topweight punters will be hard put to it to find a favourite, and in this event they will probably fix on WANDERLUST and MISTER GAMP. Many of the above horses—in fact, the majority of them —also claim engagements at the Otaki fixqre on Friday and Saturday, and so that makes the results to-morrow more than usually interesting.
