ROME AND MARRIAGE

ROTA DEFENDS ITSELF DECISIONS EXPLAINED By Cable.—Press Association —Copyright ROME, Sunday. The members of the Rota Tribunal were to-day granted an audience by the Pope. Monsignor Massimi, in replying to Press attacks, said the Rota’s matrimonial decisions numbered 55. Of these 28 granted the annulment of marriages, 14 in favour of rich people able to pay the costs, and the other 14 in favour of poor people whose costs were borne by the Rota. The latter completely absorbed the fees which the rich people paid. The Pope extolled the zeal of the Rota which, as the Church was immaculate, must, he said, be immaculate also.—A. and N.Z.-Sun.
