SIX-MONTHS’ STRIKE OVER

AMERICAN COAL-MINERS THOUSANDS RESUME WORK By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 9.17 a.m. CHICAGO, Monday. Coal operators and miners both believe that a strike settlement, which is effective throughout Illinois, is likely to influence the settlement in other centres. Men to the number of 72,000 have returned to work in Illinois on the old wage-scale, but the situation in Indiana, Ohio, lowa and Missouri, is not affected. —A. and N.Z. A cablegram from Indianapolis, dated April 1, reads as follows: —A strike of union coal-miners on the bituminous fields of the Middle West has started. Reports indicate that many miners, es 7 pecially those in the Southern Illinois coalfields, left their work ahead of the scheduled time of the strike, in order to find new employment in their respective communities. Approximately 150,000 men will drop their tools at the hour appointed. The strike is due to the refusal of the mine operators to renew the present wage scale of 32s a day. The operators maintain that they cannot continue to compete with the non-union mines, which pay 18s 9d to 20s a day.
