Storm Devastates Pacific Islands

BONIN GROUP' SWEPT WITH GREAT DAMAGE TO CROPS AND HOUSES By Cable.—Press Association. Copyright Reed. 9.5 a.m. TOKYO, Monday. Cables from the Bonin Island report that in a devastating storm more than 100 houses were wrecked and the sugar-crops badly damaged. The casualties are few.—A. and N.Z.

The Bunin Islands are in the North Pacific, and consis: of four clusters, the best-known islands or island-groups of which are Coffin, Parry, Peel and Hater. They are of volcanic origin, and largely forested. Since the recognition in 1861 of Japanese ownership, the few English and American settlements that had been established have been abandoned. The administrative seat is at Port Lloyd, on Peel Inland, known to the Japanese as Oho Minato.
