MOUNT EDEN BOROUGH
IMPROVEMENT WORKS MEETING OF THE COUNCIL At the meeting of the Mount Etien Borough Council last evening the «;n----fftneer, Mr. J. Rogers, reported that the Cromwell Street improvements were practically complete anct that the improvement work along Wynyard Road was progressing satisfactorilj . Owing to unfavourable weather work on landscape Road had been suspended for several weeks, but It was hoped to complete the work as soon as i>ossible. The surface water drainage works in the vicinity of Peary Road. Shackleton Road. St. Leonards Road and Watling Street are now approaching completion. The recommendation of the Works Committee that the eastern end of View Road be repaired and laid down in permanent material when work now in hand is completed, was approved. A representative deputation was received from ratepayers of Prospect Terrace. Mr. W. H. Nagle, as spokesman. said that this was the most dilapidated street in the borough and was very dangerous to pedestrians, as well as motor-traffic. The Mayor, Mr. E. H. Potter, said that the work would be put in hand as soon as possi ble and the footpaths would be attended to almost immediately. Building permits were issued during ;he past month for houses and other buildings to the value of £11,660. MODEL MAORI PA The invitation of the secretary of the anthropology section of the Auckland Museum to be present at a demonstration of the Maori method of cooking on Mount Eden on Satur lay was accepted. Te Akarana Maori Association wrote asking the council to consider the construction of a model Maori pa on Mount Eden. The matter was referred to the Mountain Committee. A letter was received from the Mount Eden Bowling Club applying for space for a bowling green on Nicholson Park on terms to be arranged. 'The club is to be given an option. The Local Government Loans Board wrote advising that the loan of £IOO,OOO had been sanctioned at 5f per cent, per annum, with sinking fund at 1 per cent; no interest or sini ing fund to be paid out of loan money. A letter was received from the Di-rector-General of Health asking that the amount of £259 Is 7d, being portion of the cost of the Auckland Water Commission, be paid to the credit of the public account.
The council is waiting a communication from the Minister of Health in reply to the solicitor's letter.
The Finance; Committee recommended that the extension of Crom .veil Street be carried out by the cont •actor at the price quoted. £2lB Bs, on condition that the Mount Albert Borough Council agree to pay one-half the cost.
