STRAND
“TH.LIE THE TOILER”
Marion Davies's best work in motion pictures is hard to determine, since all her roles are perfectly inimitable, but it is safe tP sqy that she gives her very best characterisation to date in her latest Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer starring vehicle, “Tillie the Toiler,” now being screened at the Strand Theatre, and directed by Hobart Henley. Charming as is Russ Westover’s stenographer heroine in his newspaper cartoons, it must be admitted that Miss Davies, in her interpretation of the role of Tillie, is even more delightful. The motion picture version pf the cartoon is a breezy comedy drama, with many touches of delightful farce, and tender pathos. Jn making this picture one of the best comedies of the year. Miss Davies has been assisted
.by a potable cast of | Jcomediaps. \ There is Matt. | Moore in the role ; of “Mac/’ the ! whimsical office • drudge, and there lis Gertrude Short as “Bubbles,” the stenographer in the ; office next door. Moqre is alw'ays • to be relied upon to • give a convincing Icharae terisaticn, land his many years of screen experience have given
him a unique knowledge of the technique of camera acting. George K. Arthur is exceptionally good as “Mr. Whippje,” and Claire McDowell makes a wonderful “Ma Jones.” Bert Roach, George Fawcett and Harry Crocker also give convincing and sincere characterisations.
