MOUNT EDEN RESERVES

REPORT BY MAYOR SCARS OF QUARRYING A report on the reserves was presented to the Mount Eden Borough Council last evening. The Mayor, Mr. E. H. Potter, stated that Mount Eden had so far been saved from destruction, but there was great difficulty in preventing permanent disfigurement being inflicted by owners of scoria pits on its fringes. On the western side were scars of quarrying operations, and great difficulty was experienced in preventing falls of scoria. This had only been done by the erection of a concrete support. Similar conditions prevailed on the eastern slopes until steps were taken to stop them. Q

Improvements to the old quarry facing Normanby Road have been carried out by unemployed. A lawn for a children’s playground has been formed, a number of native trees plapted, and the carriage drives on the eastern and western sides of the mountain have been improved. The parking area near the kiosk is nearing completion, and a rockery has been formed on the slopes of the mound on which the kiosk is situated. The top of the mountain is protected by the concrete platform, which will provide a .base for the directiontable that is to be erected through the generosity of Mr. Ernest Davis. The Mayor stated that he had received advice from England that the tabl€> had been shipped. Mr. G. L. Taylor urged the protection of native birds which find a sanctuary on the mountain. On one occasion 40 pheasants had been counted, and considerable harm had been caused by dogs. The Mayor stated that the laying out of the Bellevue Reserve had now been completed, and a rockery constructed on the northern side. In regai*d to Nicholson Park, the work of filling and levelling of the old scoria pit in is progress. Children's playgrounds, the croquet lawn, and the tennis courts are completed. A football and cricket ground of two and ahalf acres is being made on the western side.
