RUINING THE CITY’S HISTORIC WONDERS
CR. BRINSDEN MOVES TO HAVE FURTHER DESPOILATION STOPPED
So far the cutting down of the volcanic cones which give Auckland a unique distinction, has been allowed to pass with little more than disparaging comment, but Cr. F. W. Brinsden has decided to set the ball of activity moving by asking the City Council to call a conference with the idea of asking the Government to force the abandonment of any further cutting away of these hills. •'lt seems to me that we should not allow the work to continue for another moment.” stated Cr. Brinsden to THE SUN this afternoon. "In years to come nothing will be further regretted than the loss of these wonderful formations. There has been plenty of talk, but it is time we got down to action, and I hope we will receive wholehearted support in an attempt to have them declared national parks.” Cr. Brinsden has given notice to move at the- next meeting of the City Council: “That the Auckland City Council as the principal local authority in the area concerned, invite representatives of other local bodies in the metropolitan area to confer with it with the object of taking appropriate action, by promotion of a Bill, if necessary, to preserve the volcanic cones of the isthmus from further destruction, and that with this end in view the matter be referred to the Parks Committee for investigation and report to the council.”
