M. CHARLES JONNART DEAD By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright PARIS, Saturday. The death is announced of M. Charles Jonnart, a member of the Senate, and a former diplomat and Minister. —A. and N.Z. M\ Charles Jonnart was horn in 1557 in Pas-de-C&lais, which he represented in

Parliament till 1889, when he was elected Senator. He was appointed Minister of Public Works in the Casimir-Perier Cabinet (1893-1894). From 1900 till 1913 he held the post of Governor-General of Algeria. In the Briand Cabinet of 1913 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs. In the war he played a very important role as High Commissary of the Allies in Greece. In this difficult post he evinced considerable courage and firmness and performed his task with very great success. He was for some time Minister of Blockade and was president of the administrative council of the Suez Canal Company. When France resumed relations with the Vatican he was Ambassador at the Vatican. 1921-24, prior to which he had been Minister of Devastated Regions.
