RIVER VESSEL SWAMPED
ACCIDENT AT WANGANUI NO SERIOUS DAMAGE (From Our Own Corresponde?it) WANGANUI, To-day. There was a sensation on the river ->n Saturday night when it was discovered that the small steamer Waireka, safely berthed about 7 o’clock, was swamped three hours later. The Waireka, which is one of the smaller vessels of Messrs. A. Hat rick Company’s river fleet, arrived on Frida}' night from up-river settlements at the company's depot at the junction of Taupo Quay and Sonine Parade. During Saturday a cargo of timber and kerosene was taken in and the steamer was to sail up the river that night. Shortly after 7 p.m. the crew temporarily left the Waireka and on return at 10.30 p.m. were amazed to find her swamped alongside the wharf. It is surmised that the vessel became caught at the wharf ind did not get free with the rising tide, thus becoming Ailed with water. Fortunately the ' •»rgo was not perishable and no damage resulted from contact with the water. The vessel has also suffered little damage and it is expected that she will commence her voyage to-day.
