STRAND
MISS NEW ZEALAND, 1927 The ten finalists in the “Miss New Zealand,. 1927,” Film Star Quest, will appear at the Strand to-night and for the next four days in the grand finale of the contest. The finalists present a sparkling and dazzling show. They are no longer amateurs, but have been well trailed in acting and stagecraft. Theirs is a unique and original entertainment, arid includes a fascinating series of screen and stage playettes. The final item is a fashion parade, distinctive on account of its beautiful gowns, and the grace and charm of their wearers.
The whole object of the entertainment is for the ten Dominion finalists to display brains, beauty, grace and charm, in order that the Auckland public may choose the best girl as New Zealand’s ambassador to Hollywood, the Mecca of the world’s greatest stars. “She looks like a caricature” is anything but a complimentary phrase. But there are times when resemblance to a cartoon means real physical pulchritude.
As the frivolous but lovable Tillie of Russ Westover’s internationally known comic cartoon, “Tillie the Toiler,” a Metro-Goldwyn-Majrer production now showing at the Strand Theatre, Marion Davies has one of the most attractive roles of her entire screen career.
One of the physchologic reasons for the marked success of this comic cartoon, upon which this picture is based, is the daintiness of the Tillie caricature. The cartoonist has not failed to draw her as a girl of slender figure, beautiful profile, dainty proportions, with facial features indicative of personal charm, despite a frivolous nature. Matt Moore, George K. Arthur, Claire McDowell, George Fawcett, and a host of other distinguished film folk add a note of lustre to the cast; their portrayals make the picture one of immense and irresistible charm. Incidents full of pathos and comedy and drama alternate throughout. Witty titles bring spontaneous mirth. In short, for an hour of really perfect entertainment, this paper can recommend “Tillie the Toiler.”
