WOMAN ARRESTS THIEF

A COURAGEOUS. LONDONER An English lady’s pluck when attacked by a thief in a Parisian street was revealed in the Correctional Court, at Paris, where her aggressor was in the dock. The victim, Mrs. Gardner, a wealthy Londoner, was returning to her hotel, in the Rue de Rivoli, when a Spanish dancer, named Garcia Lopez, snatched her handbag and tried to make good his escape with his booty. But he had to deal with a person who did not lose her head. Mrs. Gardner ran after the thief, and, seizing him by his coat, hung on to him, shouting “thief,” until a gendarme came and arrested the man. Before the Correctional Court, when Mrs. Gardner gave evidence, the thief declared that he very much regretted his action and begged his victim to pardon him. Mrs. Gardner said she did pardon him, but the court sentenced him to 13 months’ imprisonment.
