WHANGAREI CRICKET
START OF NEW SEASON ASSOCIATION MEETS (From Oar Own Correspondent J YVHANGAREI, Saturday. At the annual meeting of the Whangarei Cricket Association to-night. Mr. J. Whimp presided over a good attendance. Officers were elected as follow: —Patron. Mr. A. J. Murdoch: president. Mr. Dreaver; vice-president, Mr. A. Hunt; secretary, Mr. R, J. Dunn: assistant secretary, Mr. C. Collins. The chairman reported that as the reclamation area would have to be sown in grass it would be necessary to interview the Borough Council or the High School Board concerning grounds. After discussion, it was recommended by the chairman that grassing experiments be carried out on the already worked portion of the reclamation, and that other parts of the grounds be prepared for the coming season, also that the Management Committee interview the Harbour Board on the ground. This was carried unanimously. A letter was received from the Portland Club complaining that last season six consecutive Saturday had been wasted by the absence of fixtures. It was afr-eed that it be a recommendation to the committee that it should arrange so as not to have such long intervals. A gold medal donated by Messrs. Fisher and Sons, to be known as the Fisher medal, is to be presented to the most-improved cricketer for the season. It was decided to recommend to the committee that the opening day be October 22. A letter of thanks is to be sent to Mr. D. Hay, manager of the New Zealand team, for supplying reports of the tour and congratulating him on the success of his team.
