THIRD PARTY RISK
“MINISTER HEDGING” COMPULSION WANTED (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. With the object of endeavouring to.secure compulsory provision for third party insurance the South Island Motor Union at its annual meeting to-day decided to enlist the support of the chambers of commerce and progress and expansion leagues of the South Island. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. K. S. Williams, wrote that in his opinion there was not at present sufficient justification for making any compulsory provision for a third party insurance of private cars. He had pointed out in the House of Representatives that inquiries showed that there was only one bankruptcy in the Wellington province within the recollection of the official assignee due to the injury of a third party in a vehicle. Mr. H. Halliday (Otago Motor Club) said the Minister was hedging. He cited instances which he dscribed as “glaring.” One ease alone was sufficient to make the Government bring in an enactment. They should ask the Chamber of Commerce and the Expansion Leagues to join with the motorists in strong protest to the Government. Mr. F. W. Johnston (Canterbury Automobile Association) seconded Mr. Halliday's motion, which was carried.
