NORTHERN TRAINS
NEW TIMETABLE URGED MR. ALLEN BELL’S SUGGESTIONS (THU HUN’S Parliamentary "Reporter.) W33LLINGTON, Friday. Several alterations in the railway timetable north of Auckland have been suggested to the Minister of Railways, by Mr. A. Bell, member for Bay of Islands, who asked the Minister if he had considered the possibility of rui>ning a daily express service between Opua, Okaihau and Auckland, and the speeding-up of the two expresses between Whangarei and Auckland by approximately one hour, the cost of the extra service to be offset by the elimination of five z>f the existing trains a week. Mr. Bell, in bringing the question before the Government, said a heavy loss was being occasioned on the Okai-hau-Otiria section because it was faster to travel by motor from Kaitaia and district, and join the train at Otiria, in spite of the extra 52 miles’ distance. Even with the completion of the metalling of the road between Okaihau and Kaitaia, the loss on passenger traffic would continue to be heavy unless a. more expeditious and efficient service were provided.
