DOINGS ON HAWERA TRACKS

At Hawera on Saturday the sand | track was in use for fast work. Paitonu and Bisox were companions j over half a mile. Bisox being in front j at the finish in 54 1-5. Royal Acre did strong pace work, i working round at 15 to the furlong. Lady Desmond and Euphonium occu- i pied attention on settting out for a i five-furlong spin. Jumping off smartly, ! the pair ran the first three furlongs in j 39, but slowed up over the last quar- i ter, the five furlongs taking I.S 2-5. Airtight and Orazone went four furlongs together with Orazone a head in front at the finish in 53 3-5. The two-year-olds Silver Rule and Golden Flower ran three furlongs down the back of the course proper, with Silver Rule showing to advantage. Golden Flower, by Tonbridge—Fleeting, although a bit on the small side, may turn out useful. Reremoana and Lady Cavendish were given pace work and a large number of horses were out doing easy exercise. GOOD HURDLER BACK San Fera is back under M. Conway’s care, and is looking in real good shape to start serious work. Whether the operation undergone has been a complete success remians to be seen. On Saturda.y morning he went a couple of rounds on the sand at a fair pace, making nothing near the noise he used to. Lady Desmond is to be given a run at the Manawatu Hunt Club’s meeting on Wednesday, October 5, and after that a run in the Waverley Cup on October 24, when a line on her New Zealand Cup prospects may be better assessed. Pop Off, formerly trained at Waverley, will in future race in different interests, and will be trained by R. Brough. Pop Off, by Killboy—Aratat, is a promising sort and last season he won five races, I besides several minor placings. Dermod, who has been lame since the hunt meeting at New Plymouth, has been sent to Kai Iwi for a spell.
