Early Morning Ellerslie Trials

STAR STRANGER’S GOOD MILE

THERE were some splendid gallops recorded at Ellerslie this morning by horses claiming engagements at the Auckland meeting next week-end, and one or two of them were rather illuminating.

THE morning broke fine, with a few _ clouds about, early morning evidence of the rain that tried hard to keep up its reputation the night before. There were a few light showers last evening, but it was quite* a tame supply, and further testimony that Jupiter Pluvius must be running dry. The tracks at Ellerslie when work commenced at 5.35 a.m. to-day were considerably better than they have been for many months, and with number one grass thrown open for galloping there were some good try-outs registered. Most notable was that returned by the Mitchelson and New Zealand Cup candidate Star Stranger, who ; went a mile in brilliant time, and obviously the race he had last Monday has brought him along in great style. For the first time since Easter the sprinters were able to break 50sec for half a mile. FIRST OUT The first to work was King Emerald, whose task was half a mile, which he covered in an easy 53, the last three in 41. The Nassau gelding ran a fair race in his last outing, and is none the worse for it. • Restaurant, Luxurious and Sleepy Sol jumped off from the seven furlongs post, but the latter was pulled up after going four, bleeding trouble having set in. The first two were cut out in 25 2-5, the three in 39 2-5, and the four in 52 2-5, the full distance being covered by Restaurant and Luxurious in 1.36 1-5. Glenlight covered a round, the last mile taking 1.57 3-5, the first four furlongs of which occupied 57 4-5. COMING TO HAND Joy King, who is to make his first appearance of the season in the Shorts Handicap next Saturday, gave evidence of returning form in a sprint over half a mile. He ran the initial furlong in 12 4-5, and the four in 51 3-5, and was doing it nicely at the end. Valsier and Bahama were partnered over the same ground, returning 54 for the rip. Star Comet was ahead of War Officer at the end of six furlongs in 1.21, the first couple taking 28 1-5. Gold Acre was in front of Serang oyer half a mile, which they left behind in 51 4-5, the last three being covered smartly in 39 1-5. GASCONY’S SPRINT The Great Northern Guineas candidate, Gascony, was stepped out over half a mile, and after running the first furlong in 12 4-5, lie finished over the last three in 38, returning 50 4-5 for the four furlongs. Another couple of gallops should see the King John gelding well tuned up. Gala Day and Thursby ran the last five furlongs of six in 1.10, the final four in 56 2-5. Piet and Corinax were given a similar task, their time also being 1.10. Lady Robinson encompassed a round in 2.2, and moved freely throughout without being hustled. SMART THREE-YEAR-OLDS The tliree-year-olds Damaris and Catkin were responsible for a real good effort over six furlongs, and both were going well at the end with very little between them. They got to the end of the first quarter in a smart 25 1-5, the three furlongs in 38 4-5, and they took 39 3- ? 5 for the final three, making 1.18 2-5 for the full distance—an attractive performance. Golden Wedding went five furlongs in 1.10 2-5, the first two occupying 28. Judge’s Box and Arihana were partnered over five furlongs, leaving the distance behind in 1.10, with the former pleasing most. SPEEDY YOUNGSTERS Second Wind finished ahead of Knightlike at the end of four furlongs run in good time. They covered the first furlong in 12 2-5, and the last three in 37 4-5, registering 50 1-5 for the half mile. Although Second Wind finished in front, Knightlike was going very smoothly on the inside of him. and was not hurried. Nevertheless, it was a pleasing effort on the part of both. Volimond (Limond-Tivoli) was to have gone with them, but she jumped off in front of them with another pair. The fastest half mile up to this stage was put down to the credit of Creation, who slipped over the distance in a surprising 49 3-5, and finished full of running. The Depredation gelding is steadily improving, and over sprint courses will take some heading. CUP CANDIDATES Mask and Alio way appeared to appreciate the improved going when they were sent together six furlongs, for they hit out with something like their true style. The first quarter took 25 4-5, the three furlongs 38 3-5, and they completed the final three in 40 1-5. There was little between them at the finish, the full time being a smart 1.18 4-5. Baby Bun and Fiery Lad went seven furlongs, and picked up at the six furlong peg they came home from there in 1.22, neither being extended. Frowning Beauty covered seven furlongs alone in 1.38 2-5. the first four taking 54 3-5. A USEFUL SPRINT Covent Garden and Thaw slipped over four furlongs in smart time, cutting out the initial furlong in 12 1-5, and the last three in 37 3-5, making 49 4-5 for the half mile. The former was going the better, and appeared to relish the changed conditions. Whaka King, accompanied by Automne, covered five furlongs in 1.5 4-5, taking 14 for the initial furlong and 25 4-5 for the quarter. The former

did better than his companion, and is obviously at the top of his form, although for a maiden he is ta.kiijg on high game in the Shorts next week. FAST MILE All eyes were focussed on Star Stranger when he was sent a mile with the stable apprentice Gilmore in the saddle. The Martian gelding was not quite at top when the clocks were

set going at the mile post. Hitting out in rare style he ran the first furlong in the bend in a good. 13 1-5, and then got to the end of the quarter in 25 4-5. Here he was picked up by Star God, the pair running together for the remainder Qf the journey. The three furlongs were covered in 39 4-5, and the first half-mile in 52 4-5, while the five occupied 1.5 4-5. They came home from here in 38 4-5, and with the last half-mile done in 51 4-5, and the full mile in 1.44 3-5, it came under the category of a great gallop. They were together at the end. Star Stranger pulled up well, albeit blowing a bit, as well he might after such a task. The fact that Star God came home the last six furlongs in 1.18 4-5 with Star Stranger showed, too, that he is going to make good. AUSSIE’S SPRINT Aussie (plated) was responsible for another smart four furlongs, running the distance in 49 4-5 without being extended. Speechless, Nassock, Te Tahi and Royal March finished in that order in a gallop from the five-furlong post, covering the distance in 1.7 4-5. Great Charter was allowed to stride along easily over five furlongs in 1.7 2-5, the last four being left behind in 51 4-5. Lysander was not hurried when he went off from the five-furlong peg, and after cutting out the first two in 25 4-5 he finished well in 1.5 4-5. Papatu ran an eassy half-mile in 55, and Daddy’s Girl the same distance in 54 3-5. This completed the pre-break-fast work. TRACK FASTER After breakfast interval the track would be a bit faster than it was at daybreak. Rafferty, who has been enjoying a spell since competing at the Pakuranga meeting, was sent over six furlongs, which he left behind in 1.26. Archeno was not hurried to do 58 2-5 for half a mile, Acuslila leaving the same distance behind in 53. From a standing start Te Monanui, Desert Glow and Phaola set out for a journey over a mile. They left the first quarter behind in 28 2-5, registered 1.7 2-5 for the first five furlongs, and were timed to do the full distance in 1.48. The last half mile took 53. They finished as named. Mint Leaf, after covering the first furlong of a mile, was picked up by Royal. Mint, and at the six-furlong post Oration joined in. The last-named finished in front of Royal Mint, with Mint Leaf close up at the conclusion of the gallop. Mint Leaf’s time for the mile was 1.47 4-5, and the sectional times as follows: First quarter, 28 2-5; first half, 53 4-5; and the last four furlongs 53 3-5. A GOOD FIVE Finelli, from a standing start, went fast over live furlongs, registering 1.4 4-5. The first furlong was covered in 14 2-5, the first quarter in 26 2-5. and the last three funongs in 38 2-5. it was a smart effort. Wyoming ran the last four of six funongs in 56. Scot Free, Amos and Right and Left were timed to do 52 for nan. a mile, finishing in that order. Laughing Prince was going comfortably ai the conclusion of six lurlongs, run in 1.20 2-o. THE JUMPERS Mangani (J. Mcßae) and Sea Comet (T. Chaplin) gave a good display over the sod, double and stonewall. After completing the task they repeated the performance. Edifice (A. Rutherford), after beingschooled over the old water jump by the mile post, was sent to jump the steeplechase fences on the flat in company with Glenotus (E. Rae) and Simplicitas (J. Sharkey). The last-named pair jumped well, but Edifice baulked at the first fence of the double, and when sent over the obstacles again he refused at the sod wall. His companions went well. Master Noel (A. Rutherford) jumped four hurdles safely. Blue Sky (E. Rae) and Master Arch (G. Holland) gave a good display over four hurdles. San Quin refused to jump the pony hurdles and threw his rider, E. Stanway, who received bruises. Quinvardia (J. Sharkey) in a lesson over four of the pony battens baulked at one and also screwed badly at another. However, she cleared the remaining two safely. Wee Marble (A. Driscoll) gave a good showing over four hurdles.
