IMPORTANCE OF TOMATOES

LOCAL GROWERS’ ASSOCIATION Interests of Auckland tomato and stone fruit-growers are to be fostered by an association which came into being as a result of a meeting of growers held yesterday. The association is called Auckland Tomato and Stone Fruit Growers’ Association. Officers were appointed as follow: President, Mr. S. W. House; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. G. W. Charman and G. R. Desmond; secretary and treasurer, Mr. G. A. Green; committee, Messrs. F. H. Fisher, S. C. Gott, R. Nicholls, E. J. Knight, C. J. Angus and I. Procter. It was pointed out at the meeting that the value of the tomato crop was increasing every year, and growers were faced with the problem of serious competition from the Islands. Similar institutions to the Auckland one have been formed in Nelson and Canterbury.
