WHEN NATURE FELL ASLEEP
There were meadow flowers and blackberries, And roses pink and wild, That wandered down the hedges, By belated winds beguiled; There were ferns all green with freshness, There were leaves of golden stain, And glow-worms dotted here and there Along the country lane. There were chantings of the rivulet— Such chantings, full of rest; And glimmering of angels* wings Above the golden west; And from the far-off city Came a humming, soft and deep, That sang the birds a lullaby As Nature fell asleep. —Jessie Milne Caged 13).
