PLAYERS DEMAND EIGHT-HOUR DAY

HOLLYWOOD SALARIES An eight-hour day is one of the first demands formulated by 700 motion picture players at a secret meeting .at Hollywood recently, when the whole body moved to join a motion picture branch of the Actors’ Equity Association. The organising of the movie actors comes as a result of the salary slashes threatened by all the large producers. Tidings of the proposed slash caused .such an panic among a thousand or more players that a branch department of Equity to handle affairs of studio employees was formed as a defensive gesture against the producers. Working conditions about the studios will be greatly affected if the eighthour day goes into effect. Players now regulate their hours to studio needs, and an eight-hour day will cause confusion and prolong production. If producers do not feel they can meet this and other demands made by the players.. Equity stands ready to arbitrate, according to Frank Gillmore, executive secretary, in charge of the organisation work at Hollywood.
