HIS MAJESTY’S

“HENRY VIII.” TO-NIGHT Mr. Allan Wilkie, whose seasons of Shakespearean plays have been enjoying enormous popularity throughout the Dominion, commences a four weeks’ stay at His Majesty’s Theatre to-nigh> when he will produce for the first time in Auckland the royal pageant play “Henry VIII.” The majestic pageantry of coronation and christening processions, and royal court scenes, combined with the powerful acting opportunities when Cardinal Wolsey, that mighty but ill-fated politician, the dignified but pathetic Queen Katharine, bluff King Hal and his courtiers, are recalled to life on the stage, makes up a dramatic feast which cannot be resisted. In order that thirteen plays may be staged during his repertoire season, Mr. Wilkie has to curtail the number of performances of “Henry VIII.” to five, including the matinee at special prices! on Wednesday next. Other plays which will be presented bv Mr. Wilkie for the first time will be “The Winter’s Tale,” “Antony and Cleopatra,” “Measure for Measure,” and “The Tempest,” besides popular re-

vivals of many favourite plays. Mr. Wilkie is fortunate on the occasion of his present visit to once more have in his company the distinguished Shakespearean actress, Miss Hunter-Watts, who on his last tour of the Dominion was unavoidably absent from his cast. He has also greatly strengthened his company by the inclusion of several well-known English and Australian artists. Since the fire which destroyed his effects last year, Mr. Wilkie has replaced costumes and stage properties for thirteen of his plays, and the dressing for “Henry VIII.” is particularly fine, as Mr. Wilkie was able to acquire the wardrobe of the late Sir Herbert Tree’s production at His Majesty’s, London. “Henry VIII.” will be played on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week, with a matinee on Wednesday. “Twelfth Night” and “The Merchant of Venice” will follow on Thursday and Friday respectively. Box plans are at Lewis R. Eady and Son, Ltd.
